Before Solo Leveling Returns, Another Anime Is Stealing Its Thunder

The demand for Solo Leveling is absurdly high as 2026 comes to a close. Hype has gone up considerably even for its follow-up story, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok as it confirmed season 3 was on the way, and the upcoming Solo Leveling: Beyond the System film is certainly going to garner more attention than the compilation film ahead of season 2. But for those who appreciate its action and LitRPG and progression fantasy elements while seeking something arguably far less serious, yet extremely fun and still quite competently animated, fall 2026 has had one truly worthwhile alternative: Overgeared.

Produced by J.C.Staff, Overgeared stands as a reminder of the studio's potential for well-received anime with the right staff attached. It's produced an interesting arc so far, starring a character who may not be wholly likable, yet entirely too compelling and entertaining all the same in Shin Youngwoo, or "Grid" as his online handle in the fictional VRMMORPG "SATISFY". While it's had some striking animated sequences including spectacular, show-stopping attacks, this anime taps into the entertaining, relatable world of the MMO crafting grind, the prospect of monetizing success in the game to generate real cash, and working one's way out of debt. It's also got its fair share of surprises for fans of the dub.

For fans of Solo Leveling who are perhaps dismayed by Sung Jinwoo's gradual deteriorated sense of emotional vulnerability, Grid is quite the opposite. Rather than being the weakest hunter like Jinwoo's earliest days, Grid's daily life as Youngwoo is one constantly saddled with debt, living with his family as a Not in Education, Employment, or Training adult, or NEET. But in SATISFY, people can become celebrities and grow rich off major accomplishments, and in Youngwoo's case, after encountering a class change turning him into Pagma's Successor, he's able to craft drastically better equipment, auctioning or outright contracting his work to NPCs with deep pockets.

It sets up a different yet entirely authentic alternative path for Grid to be a Legendary-level smith, capable of crafting Epic, Unique, or Legendary equipment, placing him handily above anybody else. Rather than replicating Jinwoo's power fantasy path, this feels almost more like an escape from debt and poverty, especially as the latest episodes soon turn the tables, Grid overcoming his debt while suddenly having to dig his family out of debt. But make no mistake: Grid isn't suddenly a noble character overnight after finally getting a taste of success, and that's ok.

Fans will find Grid harder to like in the strictest sense, as his instincts for self-preservation are hard to overlook. But for manhwa readers familiar with this particular type of character, much like Lloyd Frontera, Grid is hilariously over-the-top in everything he does. He's wildly entertaining, and even his compounded flaws make for more a more engaging personality than Jinwoo could ever manage. Overgeared has already introduced numerous high-stakes in-game quests for Grid to overcome, a growing supporting cast including Huroi, whose own unique in-game situation puts him in Grid's orbit, all of which make for fun alternatives to Solo Leveling characters like Jinho and more. But one Overgeared experience is entirely unique compared to Solo Leveling's.

Ricco Fajardo is a treat as Grid in Overgeared's English dub, but not just for giving it 110% in every scene. Much like Aleks Le as Jinwoo, Fajardo likes to have a bit of fun in the ADR process, but in the latter's case, they keep even his most unhinged recordings as they still stick to the script and spirit of the story. So English dub Grid might make the occasional reference to memes like "Democracy Manifest" featuring Jack Karlson, little offhand comments, or even "your mom" jokes, with fans eagerly compiling Overgeared's dubbed absurdity. It feels at times more like TFS Abridged production, which should absolutely be considered a compliment, even if the parody energy might undermine its authenticity at times.

Solo Leveling may be a great story, but it is nothing compared to its sequel manga, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, and fans are not ready for it.

The result isn't a wholly reinvented, legendary dub on the level of Ghost Stories presenting practically a new story, but rather, just a fun hidden treat for fans who prefer dubs over subs. With six episodes released, and six more on the way, subbed fans equally get the opportunity to enjoy Grid's adventures as he finally gets to embark on major quests as Pagma's Successor, while dub fans get access to a production not often seen in the saturated anime landscape. Solo Leveling isn't going anywhere just yet, and Overgeared is just the sort of high-energy palate cleanser to keep fans entertained going into 2027.
