It’s no secret that Tom Cruise is one of the most recognizable movie stars in Hollywood, but being such a big star doesn’t make you immune to box office disasters. After wrapping up the Mission: Impossible franchise last year with The Final Reckoning, Cruise returned to the screen a few weeks ago to star in his first original movie in almost a decade, Digger. Hailing from Alejandro G. Iñárrittu, Digger has been the box office disaster that most studio heads have nightmares about — the budget for the film reportedly ballooned to around $180 million during production, and the film has yet to reach $40 million at the box office at the time of writing. Cruise does have a few new projects coming soon, though, that will almost certainly help get his box office record back on track.

One of the most exciting announcements Cruise made earlier this year came when he confirmed that his Days of Thunder sequel, which also stars Anne Hathaway, will be released in theaters on June 2, 2028. This comes after the success of Brad Pitt’s F1 movie, which grossed over $600 million at the global box office. Cruise has stuck mostly to familiar roles in recent years, but there was a time when he was throwing out daring sci-fi thrillers and legal dramas more often than recurring roles like Ethan Hunt or Pete Mitchell. Back in 2013, one year before he starred in one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time (Edge of Tomorrow), Cruise teamed up with Morgan Freeman and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) for Oblivion, the $120 million sci-fi movie that’s officially streaming on Prime Video.

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You're a systems thinker who can't help but notice the seams in things.

The wasteland doesn't reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That's you.

You'd survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt wrote the script for Oblivion, which is based on the graphic novel story by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed the film. If Kosinski’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the director of Cruise’s 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, and he also helmed Brad Pitt’s F1. The official synopsis for Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, which earned scores of 53% from critics and 61% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows:

“In the year 2077, Jack Harper works as a security repairman on an Earth left empty and devastated after a war with aliens. Jack has two weeks left before his mission ends, and he joins his fellow survivors on a faraway colony. However, Jack's concept of reality comes crashing down after he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. The woman's arrival triggers a chain of events that culminates in Jack's nearly single-handed battle to save mankind.”
