Brandon Sanderson fans are facing a serious wait for the next chapter of the epic The Stormlight Archive, which has become one of the most celebrated modern fantasy series and will even be getting an official Apple TV adaptation in the coming years. Following the release of Wind and Truth in December 2024, Sanderson officially brought the first five-book arc to a close, setting the stage for the highly anticipated "Back Five."

Unfortunately, Book 6 isn't expected to arrive until at least 2031, with Sanderson recently confirming plans to begin writing in January 2028. The author intends to spend much of 2027 outlining the remaining five installments, offering some reassurance that the larger story is moving forward.

Fortunately, Stormlight fans have something else to celebrate in the meantime. The franchise's newest release is already proving to be a massive success, attracting an overwhelming response from fans and demonstrating just how much enthusiasm remains for Sanderson's beloved fantasy universe.

Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive has another massive success on its hands, with Stormlight: War for Roshar raising millions of dollars through its Kickstarter campaign, which just ended yesterday. Developed by Brotherwise Games in partnership with Dragonsteel, the upcoming strategy board game launched its crowdfunding campaign on October 13, with an initial funding goal of just $100,000.

That target was quickly demolished, with the campaign going on to raise well over $3 million from thousands of backers before its November 5 conclusion. The overwhelming response has also allowed Brotherwise to dramatically expand what backers will receive, unlocking numerous additional rewards and stretch goals throughout the campaign.

In fact, the developer originally planned just 15 stretch goals, but that number eventually increased to a whopping 29. Among the biggest additions is a highly requested solo mode, which designer John D. Clair is now working to incorporate into the base game. Brotherwise also confirmed that all 12 Leader miniatures will receive entirely new sculpts, alongside an optional $40 Stormlight Heroes & Villains miniature set.

A special Final Day stretch goal was also announced on November 5, offering backers the opportunity to unlock a second set of holofoil Leader cards. Aside from that, fans who selected the highest pledge tiers have plenty to look forward to. The $295 Fifth Ideal tier includes deluxe game upgrades and several Cosmere miniature collections, while the $375 Herald tier adds three additional Cosmere tabletop releases, including Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, its Well of Ascension expansion, and Shards of Creation. Even the separate Mistborn miniature collection has expanded from 16 figures to 20 through stretch goals.

As for the game itself, War for Roshar is an asymmetrical strategy experience that allows players to command opposing factions representing Honor and Odium. Featuring iconic characters including Kaladin, Dalinar, Raboniel, and Taravangian, the game combines army management, diplomacy, card-based combat, and strategy as players battle for control of Roshar.

Players can build alliances, recruit powerful forces, unlock Surgebinding abilities, and compete for strategically important Oathgates. The main game supports two to four players, with the newly announced solo mode (also unlocked as part of the overwhelming Backerkit response) expanding gameplay options for even more players.

War for Roshar is currently targeting November 2027 for Kickstarter fulfillment, with a wider retail release also planned for the 2027 holiday season, though that could obviously change. While an exact retail launch date hasn't been confirmed, the game's extraordinary crowdfunding success suggests that Sanderson fans will have plenty to look forward to long before The Stormlight Archive Book 6 arrives.
