A24 has released dozens of successful projects this year, but few have had the same lasting impact as Backrooms. The film hit theaters a few weeks after Obsession, which became a global sensation and went on to gross over $520 million at the box office on a $750,000 budget. Backrooms arrived two weeks after Obsession, and while A24 spent $10 million on the making of the film, it proved to be more than worth this investment by grossing exactly $400 million at the box office. Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, who earned an Oscar nod for his performance in 12 Years a Slave — he’s also famous for his work as Baron Mordo in both of the Doctor Strange movies in the MCU.

Backrooms was directed by Kane Parsons, and it’s based on his popular series of YouTube videos, which made him the perfect choice to direct the feature film, even if he was only 20 years old at the time of release. There have been reports that A24 is interested in a Backrooms sequel, but there’s been no concrete news that a second movie is nearing the start of production. However, those waiting for more Backrooms content have something to be excited about that will be here much sooner than a hypothetical sequel. A new shooter game, Backrooms: Savior, was recently announced on Steam, and it’s now been confirmed that the game will launch on PC in March 2027. The game will allow players to explore all the terrifying space the Backrooms have to offer, only now they’ll go in armed and dangerous, making for a much different experience.

Four franchises, four completely different ways of getting underneath your skin. This is the one built out of your particular fear, why it works so well on you, and what it would leave behind.

Your nightmare does not wait outside the door. It waits for you to close your eyes, which you are going to have to do eventually, because nobody has ever won that particular argument.

Your nightmare is not really the doll. It is the face of the person you tell, and the way they decide, very kindly, that you have imagined all of it.

Your nightmare has your number, knows your name, and has almost certainly been inside your house before. The worst part is that you already know them.

Your nightmare is not really about you. It is about the people asleep down the hall, and the feeling that whatever is here is not interested in leaving.

Other than the reported Backrooms sequel, about which little is known at this time, Kane Parsons has not signed any deals to direct another movie at the time of writing in late October. However, after the colossal success of the film, and with Parsons being so young, it would be shocking if he didn’t choose to parlay his work with Backrooms into another horror film. Backrooms is now available to stream on HBO Max for those who didn’t catch the movie in theaters, and it’s been in the streaming top 10 for over 50 days now.
