The new CBS series Eternally Yours brings vampires to Seattle and explores the love that Charles (Ed Weeks) and his wife, Liz (Allegra Edwards), have somewhere deep down after their marriage has grown stale after 500 years together. Like many vampire stories before it, Eternally Yours plays with the idea of what a vampire is capable of, including how their abilities differ between vampires. At New York Comic Con, the cast spoke with Collider about the new show, powers, and what could potentially happen in the future for its characters.
Jesse (Parker Young) is the only vampire in their coven who has the ability to mind-wipe humans, meaning that he is someone who can make you forget that your entire family are vampires — that is, if you're his human wife, Phyllis (Rose Abdoo). These powers are all slow-moving, though. The half-vampire children of Phyllis and Jesse are still learning their powers, and at NYCC, Jaren Lewison spoke to Collider about how excited he is to explore Max's powers as a baby vampire.
"I'm just honestly interested in what powers Max is going to have because we do see that in our show, vampires have different powers. Not everyone has the same powers. Some of them have special powers, like Jesse is the only one that can do the mind wipe. I don't know what powers Max has yet and he's a baby vampire. He's sort of... they're coming in as we speak. So I think we all have telepathy, I think we all have the super speed that goes in short bursts. I think we all have super strength, but I'm not sure. So there's a lot that we're going to end up learning."
Four franchises, four completely different ways of getting underneath your skin. This is the one built out of your particular fear, why it works so well on you, and what it would leave behind.
Your nightmare does not wait outside the door. It waits for you to close your eyes, which you are going to have to do eventually, because nobody has ever won that particular argument.
Your nightmare is not really the doll. It is the face of the person you tell, and the way they decide, very kindly, that you have imagined all of it.
Your nightmare has your number, knows your name, and has almost certainly been inside your house before. The worst part is that you already know them.
Your nightmare is not really about you. It is about the people asleep down the hall, and the feeling that whatever is here is not interested in leaving.
In many bits of vampire media, the idea of powers for vampires changes depending on the established universe. Properties like Blade and Twilight allow for the idea of a day walker, or a vampire that can go out into the sun and not burn alive. But there are many layers to vampire lore and the way that it is introduced into a property. Especially when it comes to the powers that a vampire can possess. In Eternally Yours, each vampire has their own special set of powers. Some overlap, some are unique, and it is going to be fun to see how Max evolves throughout the series.
You can watch new episodes of Eternally Yours on CBS every Thursday. Stay tuned at Collider for more.
