The Legend of Zelda has been rejuvenated for a number of reasons in recent times, not least because the franchise is celebrating a staggering 40 years since it first debuted. As part of that, Nintendo has confirmed and revealed further details on a number of exciting projects, many of which are coming up within the next six months or so.

Another big part of its recent return to immense prominence has been the dedicated work of fans, who have pulled together to bring back as many of the older releases from the doldrums as possible. Now, one of the most exciting ongoing efforts in that regard has reached yet another version, and the list of improvements is getting longer by the day.

Over on Twitter/X, the user DaniCorpHQ shared a post celebrating the native PC port of The Wind Waker HD, which is progressing very quickly. This era of recomp/decomp has brought back games from the past similarly to emulation, only it allows players a much more usable experience that's comparable to a first-party release in 2026.

The full list of supported features in v0.2.1 is as follows:

As you might expect, there were plenty of fans in the responses who wanted to share their thoughts on the release so far, and it's fair to say that the sentiment is very positive overall. "It's a godsend, these decomp recomps, when you know the hassle, the fact that companies are incapable of preserving the source code," one comment read.

While another added, "A thousand times, yes, after all this time, I've wanted to play it again! Thanks for keeping watch for us."

"My favorite game ever I can't wait to play it again," a third said. Elements like the controller support are the real leap forward, as controlling characters in emulation is always a bit of a nightmare, particularly when it comes to mapping controls that were simply never designed to be played on PC.

Whether you care about The Wind Waker HD specifically or not, projects like the one above are fantastic ways of ensuring gaming experiences from the past are preserved for as many people as possible. As for The Legend of Zelda more generally, fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months, most notably the arrival of the Ocarina of Time Remake for the Switch 2. That directly leads into the release of the big budget movie adaptation, which should mean that fans are going to eat well for a while to come yet.
