Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will brilliantly continue one of Star Trek's classic tropes in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's second and final season will premiere in March 2027 on Paramount+ and will consist of 10 episodes.
Family drama will take center stage in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, thanks to the arrival of a pair of special guest stars. Rosemarie DeWitt joins as Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed, and mother of cadets Tarima (Zoe Steiner) and Ocam (Romeo Carere). Laytha brings Betazoid mother-daughter vibes reminiscent of Deanna (Marina Sirtis) and Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Meanwhile, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will delve into what it means to be a Lanthanite who can live for thousands of years when Academy Award nominee Bill Nighy beams aboard the USS Athena. Nighy plays Nyk Ake, the father of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). Nyk is a full-Lanthanite, so half-Lanthanite Nahla gets her immortality from her father's side of the family.
When Bill Nighy's guest spot in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 was announced at New York Comic Con's Star Trek universe panel, Holly Hunter dropped another surprise bombshell: “He plays my dad, and I play me and my twin, my twin sister.” Hunter is playing double duty and will portray the Ake twins for at least one episode of Starfleet Academy season 2.
Paul Giamatti will not return as Nus Braka in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, but another Academy Award nominee is joining Holly Hunter's show.
Bella Shepard, who plays cadet Genesis Lythe, gushed that it was like “there were two Hollys on set. It was crazy.” Indeed, Hunter portraying the twin sister of her irreverent Starfleet Captain is an ingenious decision. Hunter is an Oscar winner, but playing identical twins in a Star Trek series is a new challenge that Holly takes on with aplomb.
Star Trek's 60-year history is replete with actors who have played alternate versions of their characters, going back to William Shatner playing Captain James T. Kirk split into good and evil versions in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1's "The Enemy Within." Playing multiple characters is practically a rite of passage for Star Trek actors.
However, Holly Hunter playing Nahla's twin should be fascinating because, no doubt, the Captain's twin sister will have a very different personality. There'd be no point in making Nahla's twin just like her, and conflict would arise from their stark differences. Holly plays Nahla as irrepressible and eccentric, yet steely when in command as captain and chancellor. What will Nahla's twin sister be like?
Playing dual roles in Star Trek, whether it's the result of a transporter accident, time travel, the Mirror Universe, alternate timelines, or, in Holly Hunter's case, an identical twin sibling, is a true test of an actor. It's also a challenge that every Star Trek actor has risen to in every TV series in the franchise. Holly Hunter will be no different, and may even rewrite the book on playing identical twins in Star Trek.
Starting with William Shatner's good and evil Captain Kirks, some of the best cases in Star Trek of playing dual roles include Brent Spiner as Lt. Commander Data and his android brother, Lore, as well as Jonathan Frakes as Commander Will Riker and his transporter clone, Lieutenant Thomas Riker, in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Recently, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's finale was a showcase for Celia Rose Gooding, who played two versions of Lieutenant Nyota Uhura one year apart. Gooding brought the two Uhuras side-by-side on screen, and the effect was seamless, thanks to how Celia's performances differentiated the Nyotas when they were apart and when they met.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has, since its pilot episode, been impeccably acted by its talented cast of young actors and Star Trek veterans. The beleaguered, canceled-too-soon Star Trek series is a masterpiece that is bound to stand the test of time. Holly Hunter playing identical twins will no doubt be a master class of acting by the Academy Award winner.
