If you’re a DC, Marvel, and/or Star Wars fan, you’ll have wanted to tune into the announcements that came out of New York Comic Con 2026 this past weekend. There was something for everyone, basically, with news from panels regarding Marvel Comics’ Midnight horror universe and The Amazing Spider-Man #1001, and DC Comics’ Batman: Justice Year and Absolute Justice, for instance. Spider-Man’s 2027 slate is unsurprisingly stacked, what with Peter Parker being an Avenger and apparently butting heads with Miles Morales in their crossover event, The Amazing Spider-Man/Miles Morales: Spider-Man: Crisis of Faith.
Star Wars’ 50th anniversary milestone is being celebrated in 2027 and will kick off the year in stunning fashion this upcoming January. Indeed, perhaps the most unprecedented announcement at NYCC 2026 was a limited series comic book crossover event that marks a momentous occasion for two of the biggest franchises ever: Star Wars and Marvel.
As per NYCC 2026 and the official Marvel website, Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles is a six-issue limited series featuring the first-ever Star Wars and Marvel Comics crossover, and it’s everything you could want. In particular, Alex Ross’ “Alliance” variant cover features a web-slinging Spider-Man and a lightsaber-wielding Luke Skywalker as they defend themselves against incoming stormtrooper blaster bolt fire. Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles boasts a wealth of variant cover themes, including:
The premise of this crossover is that the Star Wars universe comes crashing into Marvel’s—a Tuesday in the Marvel universe, as it would probably seem like yet another literal alien/space invasion for the inhabitants of Earth-616, only on a scale greater than the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Chitauri invasion in The Avengers. It’s hard to believe that this will officially be the first-ever Star Wars and Marvel Comics crossover, and it’s doubly bewildering that it’ll reportedly be canon somehow.
Star Wars is known for sweeping a big portion of its lore under a Legends rug and declaring it non-canon, including comic book series and video games. Of course, while they’ve been teased in canonical Star Wars lore, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed not yet being formally folded into canon proper is egregious, and the same goes for many terrific Star Wars Legends stories.
Nonetheless, Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ art alone is excellent. The only tragedy is that, because it takes place smack dab in the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, it’s unlikely to feature an appearance from Star Wars’ newest legendary meme character, Star Wars: Galactic Racer’s Biddy Blas.
Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles #1 is scheduled to be released in January 2027.
Star Wars is a multimedia franchise that started in 1977 by creator George Lucas. After the release of Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope (originally just titled Star Wars), the franchise quickly exploded, spawning multiple sequels, prequels, TV shows, video games, comics, and much more. After Disney acquired the rights to the franchise, they quickly expanded the universe on Disney+, starting with The Mandalorian.
