He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.

You'd think that, three decades into his career, Jason Statham has done it all. But you'd be wrong. Statham still hasn't starred in a streaming original, but this is about to change soon. It was recently reported that Statham will reunite with Guy Ritchie on a Netflix action movie that, going by their past records on streaming, has the potential to become a massive hit. Statham has three major movies lined up, and he needs them to work. He's had a particularly difficult year, with both his action vehicles underperforming at the box office. However, both films have found considerable success in their post-release phase.

The first out of the gate was Shelter, directed by Ric Roman Waugh. The movie was released in the Statham stronghold month of January, following last year's A Working Man and 2024's The Beekeeper. Shelter wasn't able to replicate the success of those films, grossing $55 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. However, with mostly positive reviews and typically enthusiastic fan reception, the movie has emerged as a hit on the Starz streaming service.

A few months later, Statham returned to star in his second action movie of the year, but tragedy befell the film only a few days before its release. The movie was accidentally uploaded to Prime Video, where it remained for long enough to be illegally downloaded and disseminated online by pirates. It's anyone's guess how badly the film was impacted by the leak, but in the end, it wound up falling short of Shelter both critically and commercially.

We're talking, of course, about Mutiny. Directed by Jean-François Richet and also featuring Annabelle Wallis, the film grossed $30 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million. It now holds a 49% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Mutiny offers up a bounty of crunchy carnage that Jason Statham serves with characteristic finesse, but convoluted plotting and an unrelentingly grim tone weigh down this action flick's fun factor like an anchor." The film's 85% audience score has helped it garner success at home.

According to FlixPatrol, Mutiny has spent more than 50 days on the domestic Amazon chart, which is currently topped by Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot. Statham will next star in the long-awaited action sequel The Beekeeper 2, which is due out in January. Then, he will headline Ritchie's Viva La Madness, followed by David Leitch's meta-action-comedy Jason Statham Stole My Bike. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
