EXCLUSIVE: Fox Entertainment Global (FEG) is hoping to take Extracted worldwide via a new production hub in Malaysia, its first international hub.
With MIPCOM kicking off today in Cannes, sales execs at FEG will be sitting down with buyers to unveil the Malaysian hub, which qualifies for local tax incentives.
Numerous international versions of the survival competition format can be filmed at the hub, which is based in the wilderness of Lake Kenyir replete with jaguars and pythons. The turnkey hub has a permanent headquarters and sets. Fox stressed it gives access to local crews and tax incentives, and said it has “more cameras than the Super Bowl.”
Extracted launched last year and has been a big hit for Fox, landing 45 million viewers across its first two seasons and already greenlit for ea third. Exec produced by Sylvester Stallone and filmed in British Columbia, the show challenges ordinary people to survive alone in an unforgiving wilderness with no training, no supplies, and no contact with the outside world. Watching every moment from a remote headquarters are their loved ones, who ultimately decide whether to let them continue or press the ever-present “EXTRACT” button, ending both the contestant’s journey and their family’s chance at the grand prize. Season 2 wrapped in April and was won by RJ Reynolds, a Project Manager from Texas.
The hub is Fox’s first internationally, although it does have a Next Level Chef hub in Ireland for the Gordon Ramsay series.
“Extracted has all the ingredients of a universally resonant format: a powerful premise, stunning visuals, unforgettable family dynamics, and incredibly high stakes,” said FEG President Prentiss Fraser. “The infrastructure we’ve built in this Malaysia hub accelerates the series’ international expansion, offering licensees the infrastructure and expertise to create their own versions more efficiently, while delivering the scale and intensity that make the show so compelling.”
Fox execs are out in full force in Cannes this week, with the network’s Baywatch reboot set to be one of the hot shows on the Croisette.
