Star Trek has been through all sorts of memorable guises over the years, and your own favorite likely just depends on which came along at the right time for you to enjoy it properly. One of the most divisive entries in the franchise to date is undoubtedly Voyager, which had all sorts going for it that it never really managed to carry through to fruition.
The show made a notoriously strong start, eschewing the notions of what Star Trek should be, and taking the themes to places that fans had never seen before. After that, the return to a formula that we'd already seen before in several adaptations slowed down its momentum, even if there were several characters who really carried the show through to its conclusion.
What you might not know is that Voyager made a return of sorts earlier this year, and in an entirely new medium, no less.
Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown, a story-driven survival strategy game where players take the helm of the titular USS Voyager. Along the way, you'll have to manage all the different members of your crew, use resources wisely, and make crucial decisions that could make or break you journey through the stars.
In sharing a little about what players can expect from the game, developer Gamexcite posted the following description in stores:
"Did you ever wonder what would have happened had Captain Janeway decided differently? If an important crew member had followed a different path? Or what the outcome would have been had the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager embraced Borg technology to increase their chances of survival?
"Wonder no more: Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown allows players to take control and shape the journey of the U.S.S. Voyager as they want. Take a risky approach or play it safe. Be diplomatic or let phasers do the talking. Research technologies that were shunned by the crew. But: Be prepared to deal with the consequences of your actions! The game features rogue-like elements, so in each run you will encounter different situations and even iconic characters might meet an early end if you don’t react accordingly."
The various systems in play are extremely deep, and a bit of a dream if you've ever wanted to be in charge of your own starship. You'll start the game with a badly damaged USS Voyager, and it will be up to you to decide what to build and when, ensuring the ship has everything it needs for the perilous journey.
Unusually for a game of this ilk, it also gives players very close control over combat systems and elements. You can target specific systems on enemy ships, or assign specific crew members to roles where they might bring more to the party than anyone else.
In even better news, Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown is currently 30% off until November 3, while the Deluxe Edition is reduced by 20%, and the Captain's Collection is 15% down.
